It’s world cup playoff day! For many people the standout tie would be Ronaldo v Ibra otherwise known as sexy footballer v sexy footballer also known as Portugal v Sweden but I will not be watching this. Neither will I be watching the almost certainly sleep inducing England v Chile game. No I will be watching Iceland v Croatia. It is for me the tie of the round. The ‘goliath’ Croatia veteran of many world cups taking on the ‘david’ Iceland who would be the smallest ever qualifying nation. More than this though it has all the hallmarks of an upset. Croatia are in chaos. This game will be their first under a new manager; Niko Kovac. Kovac’s new team don’t appear to be a patch on the Croatia of old. After a frankly awful qualifying campaign Croatia made it into the playoffs as the team who scored the fewest goals out of any team in the playoffs. Iceland by contrast are led by the talismanic Eidur Guðjohnsen with the rest of the team made up of the under 21s team who performed so well at the under 21s euro champs a few years back. I’m so confident of an Iceland win that I’ve even backed up my beliefs with a small bet.
